How to Wake Up Early the Easy Way

I have never been an early riser.  Even in the military I was never able to get in the habit of waking up at a reasonable time.  Unfortunately, now that I am a father and husband I realize that the earlier I wake up, the easier it is for me to get things done that would otherwise jeopardize family time.  That being said, I have had to devise tools of forcing myself to wake up a couple hours earlier than I normally would.  Some are obvious, and some are creative, but hopefully all of them work to help wake you up!

Go to Bed Early!

Yeah, this tip is obvious.  No matter what you do, unless you go to bed at a reasonable time, you aren’t going to wake up at a reasonable time. I find that if I go to bed somewhere around 9 o’clock at night, I am am able to get out of bed without a problem.  In addition, I also notices that I tend to wake up earlier than expected.  For example, I began writing the draft of this post at 3:30 AM today because I went to bed just a little earlier than usual (about 8:45 PM).  It’s hard to get into the habit of sleeping early, but good things always seem to be difficult.

Drink Water Throughout the Day (Especially Before Bed)

Rather than constantly hitting the snooze button, use your own bodily functions as an alarm that your body can’t ignore.  My logic is this, the more opportunities that you have to wake up the better.  If you get out of bed 3 times during the night to answer the call of nature, at least one of those moments are going to be close to your scheduled wake up.   Take advantage of the situation and convince yourself to stay awake!

Have a Reason for Waking Up Before you Sleep

Your body and mind will only wake up early if there is an important reason for it.  For example, have you ever had an important exam or occasion that caused you to stay away all night?  The reason that happened is because your brain knew the importance of that event and the consequences that would come as a result of missing the event if you overslept.  That being the case, your body forced you to stay awake so you wouldn’t miss it!

If you convince yourself that there is important work to be done in the morning, your body will have a much easier time getting out of bed.  If you have a purpose of getting out of bed, a real purpose, then you will find a way to wake up.

Don’t Think About Waking Up!

The more you lay in bed thinking about waking up, the less likely you will.  We are very good at rationalizing the reasons for staying in bed and sleeping that extra 30 minutes.  If you wake up at the first chance, you are more likely to get your day started. this is the most important tool for waking up early.  As with anything else, if we rationalize the reasons for not doing it, then we won’t do it.  Don’t give your mind the chance to say no.  Get up and go!
