Last time, I wrote about three productivity apps for Linux users that were designed to help you get things done quickly. Now just because I prefer Linux to Windows doesn’t mean that it would be right for me to ignore the vast majority of folks that enjoy using a lesser operating system (just kidding). Actually, Windows offers a lot when it comes to productivity applications – far more than Mac or Linux. Here is a list of my top three Windows applications that can help you get things done!

Enso by Humanized
Sometimes using a mouse can be so slow. Often, you have to click multiple times in order to get to what you want, but not anymore. Enso , by Humanized™, is an application that takes advantage of the caps lock key (which is hardly ever used by most people) and transforms your computer into a keyboard driven productivity powerhouse. With it, you can open applications, do Google searches, or perform calculations.
Unfortunately, it looks as though development of Enso has either slowed, or has come to a complete halt. However, Enso is still a great tool and offers a lot to those who desire to be keyboard ninjas. Oh, and it’s FREE!
You can find out more about Enso, or download it here.
Evernote
Why hold on to business cards, recipes, or any other printed document when you can store them all in one place and access them wherever you are? Evernote™ helps to remove the clutter of paper notes so you can use them more effectively. With it, you can store virtually anything that you can think of onto Evernote’s online servers by taking a picture of it, clipping it off a web page, or by recording audio. Not only can you store things, you can access it via their web interface, desktop application, the iPhone, and a whole host of other ways. The coolest thing about Evernote™ it its text recognition ability, which makes any text on pictures you upload searchable.
There are free and paid versions of the application available for download here!
Notepad (Plain Text)
Before you throw your shoe at me, no I am not joking about Windows Notepad being an excellent productivity tool. Sometimes, the most productive thing that you can do is to get rid of complexity and move toward simplicity. Plain text organization allows you to do just that. It is light-weight, it is on every computer, and it is highly extensible. If you don’t believe me, check out these posts:
- Make a PowerPoint presentation with plain text.
- Todo.txt (A plain text organitask tracker)(Note: Requires Cygwin in order to use on Windows).
- List your life in plain text.
In addition to these ideas, you could always use notepad as a simple to-do list (what a concept). If you are a developer and you need something with a little bit more power, why not give Notepad++ a try?
Conclusion
While this list of applications may not be extensive, it is only the first installment of a series that will help you to get things done faster on Windows. Do you have a productivity application that you swear by? Please, don’t hesitate to mention your favorite productivity applications in the comment section!
